What is acupuncture?
- Acupuncture, a component of traditional Chinese medicine, was born more than 5000 years ago. The Chinese discover on the body the existence of points which, when wounded (bites, scratches), activate the cure of certain diseases. Acupuncture is born! They then use pointed stone arrowheads to stimulate these points. With the advent of bronze, they make metal needles: the puncture (the equivalent of a sting) becomes less painful and finer! They observe and note the existence of paths along the body (the meridians) containing other sensitive points. By pricking them, we understand little by little their effects. 360 main Chinese points are counted of which fifteen are used in obstetrics.
Acupuncture, how does it work?
- Acupuncture stimulates a specific point to provoke a therapeutic action at a distance. Several mechanisms come into play: the stimulation of the energy circuit in relation to all the functions of the organism and the production of active substances by the nervous system.
- In the first case, the acupuncturist stings a point and causes an almost immediate effect of relief, relaxation. It is a reflex effect, due to the passage of a nerve impulse.
- In the second case, the stimulation of other points triggers the production of particular substances called endorphins. These have an action on the relaxation and against the pain close to that of the morphine.
